Currently sixteen states (California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Washington) allow illegal immigrants to pay the same in-state tuition rates as other residents of the state. To qualify, students must have attended a school in the state for a certain number of years, have graduated high school in the state, have confirmed they are applying for legal citizenship.

It is better to get undocumented immigrants into the public college system so that they can earn degrees and contribute to the economy. They are not wealthy and for all practical purposes, resident of the state. So, given them an opportunity to pursue college education will ensure that they come into the mainstream, become valuable citizens, pay taxes, and overall contribute to our economy. It is to the advantage of the community to offer undocumented immigrants in-state tuition.

Yes
@9FQK4YQ7mos7MO
Why would we give an illegal immigrant in-state tuition prices while we tell the young adult that worked hard to get the grades to get into that school in that state that they have to pay a higher price? When you give to one group out of pity for their situation, you're telling all the other groups from the poor to the rich that that person is more important than them, that person is better than them, and that person deserves more. When you do that you create a hostile environment that breeds hate.
@VulcanMan6 7mos7MO
So then surely you believe in providing free/accessible higher education to all people, right?
@9F8B5FV7mos7MO
no they should not because many Americans are struggling to find jobs, get into colleges and lack the support they need when they need help with providing either for their family or themselves. many illegal immigrants are taking our jobs and causing more poverty and over population in certain parts of our country and its not fair that they can come to our country and take our jobs or have the government support the when our own citizens are struggling and are not getting much help if any because of them.
@VulcanMan6 7mos7MO
So then do you support guaranteeing free college to all US citizens, or do you actually just hate everyone? Because you can't just use "Americans" as a prop to further deny resources to immigrants if you don't even actually support providing free resources to citizens either...
@9L88VD3 3wks3W
What made you jump to that conclusion? Illegal immigrants should be deported, not given favorable tuition rates for in state residents. I will agree there's a lot wrong with our education system, and tuition is inflated all around. Many students pursue degrees that are useless in helping them provide for themselves in a career, and either their parents pay out the anoos for it or the students themselves go into debt. We should stress the importance of choosing a degree that can actually help a student get a good job or career, and present alternatives to university like trade schools.… Read more
@9FSZF2Q7mos7MO
I believe undocumented students should have the same opportunities as every other citizen in the US in education .
@9F84RFS7mos7MO
for example like honduras people are suffering because of the president he wants to make the country socialism.
@ISIDEWITH10yrs10Y
No, and all illegal immigrants should be deported
@9FND73T7mos7MO
If they have done nothing illegal like selling drugs or any felonies then they should get in state tuition the same as everyone else.
All immigrants should not be deported, especially if they are becoming legal soon, they did all the paperwork and stuff so there is no point for them to be deported if they have a chance of becoming legal.
@9GKJ92Y6mos6MO
Illegal Immigrants have no place in the US, any person wanting to use the oppurtunites of education provided by America should be a citizen first.
@9FWFWQY7mos7MO
Immigrants, including illegal immigrants, contribute substantially to the economy and tax revenue. Instead, we should modernize and streamline the naturalization process to encourage laborers and highly skilled workers to come to the US.
@ISIDEWITH10yrs10Y
Yes, and they should also be eligible for financial assistance and scholarships
@9FL7LY4 7mos7MO
The Center for Migration Studies of New York estimates there are more 1.7 million highly educated undocumented immigrants 18 and older in the United States. Approximately 1.9% of all students enrolled today are undocumented immigrants. Colleges already accept undocumented immigrants into their degree programs. They have the motivation to pursue their American dream, which is what brought them to the US in the first place. We should help them become contributing members of society, pay their taxes, and help strengthen our economy as a whole. It is also allowed for immigrants of any legal statu… Read more
@9FP8WVMRepublican7mos7MO
By simply accepting these undocumented immigrants into public Universities across the country, we are giving them no incentive to get to the point of paying their taxes, strengthening the economy, or even becoming legal citizens, because they have clearly already been shown that there is no need to do the work required for it. They are going to get accepted anyway without having to pay taxes to support the university that they're going through, giving them an unfair advantage agains legal children trying to get into to college but struggling to pay because of the taxes they are having to pay.
@9FNL5C6 7mos7MO
Why should a criminal be granted financial assistance when they should not even be here. If an immigrant is suffering in their own country they should apply for citizenship and pay taxes. Then I will support them.
@9GC6NF96mos6MO
If Biden has raised taxes, lower tax brackets can't help their kids pay for college. College should be free or at least at a lower price because $10,000 a year for school is crazy.
@9G29XVFIndependent6mos6MO
Those who earn scholarships are those who should be rewarded based on ability, skill, and determination. The scholarships should have nothing to do with social background. Financial assistance should be given to those who need it.
@ISIDEWITH10yrs10Y
Yes, as long as they pay taxes
@9FLX3PZ7mos7MO
everyone should pay taxes, even if you are illegal. but that still doesnt give you the right to vote.
@9FND73T7mos7MO
They are paying taxes the same as everyone else they deserve the same opportunities as long as they have not been convicted of any felonies.
@988NV6X1yr1Y
People who pay taxes should be offered the same rates as others no matter who they are, if they consider themselves American, who is the government to stop them.
@ISIDEWITH10yrs10Y
No, they should pay the same rate as out-of-state students
@9FND73T7mos7MO
They have the same opportunities as everyone else if they pay taxes and have no criminal background.
@9GRZP645mos5MO
They should pay the same rate because if it was unequal and if people just came to America so they pay a lower rate of pay than in-state students it would be highly unfair to the people who actually live in the country
@ISIDEWITH10yrs10Y
Yes, but deny eligibility for financial assistance and scholarships
@9GRZP645mos5MO
If you deny eligibility then what's the point of trying hard for good grades or whatever if it's impossible for you to go to college with a scholarship? You'd basically be losing hard workers for nothing by revoking their right to financial assistance and scholarships
@53JFHTC3yrs3Y
It is hard to deny anyone an education; the real answer should be to minimize or eliminate tuition all together.
Deleted8mos8MO
Yes, and they should also be eligible for free, higher education
Yes, but only if they’re confirmed to be in the process of seeking citizenship in their chosen state
@99T5L2L1yr1Y
No and deny eligibility for FASFA
@98HKX4L1yr1Y
Yes, and they should also be eligible for financial assistance and scholarships and grant them citizenship
@9D6RZ6G9mos9MO
Current in-state tuition prices should be the tuition prices for all students, including immigrants.
While it's understandable to want equal tuition prices for all students, it's also crucial to consider the financial implications for the state. In-state tuition rates are typically subsidized by state taxes, paid by residents. If all students, including those who are undocumented immigrants, are offered these rates, it could potentially strain the state's education budget. For instance, in California, a state with a significant immigrant population, this could lead to budget deficits or cuts in other important areas like healthcare or infrastructure.
However, I do see the importance of affordable education for all. Maybe there's a middle ground here? Perhaps a tiered tuition system or scholarships specifically for undocumented students? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
@92LK8GL2yrs2Y
No, not until they become documented
@95SSZYG2yrs2Y
Yes, and they should also be eligible for financial assistance and scholarships, as long as they pay taxes
Yes, and Grant them citizenship
@9L74FFC3wks3W
Yes, but only if they’re confirmed to be seeking legal citizenship and have lived and attended school in their chosen state for a set period
@8TKS6WH3yrs3Y
Yes if they have proof of residence
@8SHMBRT3yrs3Y
They need to be documented
@9BJHDWG12mos12MO
If they become documented
@99QQFS41yr1Y
@99CNVM9Progressive1yr1Y
Yes, but they should apply for citizenship
@997D2VW1yr1Y
Depends on why they are undocumented
Yes, as long as they meet their college's in-state residency requirements
@98PGFMF1yr1Y
No, but there should be a way that would allow them to become documented citizens.
