There have been many cases to support why defunding would be necessary, such as the death of George Floyd. Although there are cops that claim he was a threat, they handled that claim by suffocating him. As well as this, the creation of Cop City in Atlanta has alarmed people due to its frightening nature.

 @9HP7387  from Iowa disagreed…3mos3MO

What's the alternative to police? If you have an emergency, an intruder in your home, or you see somebody get shot, who would you call to help? If the police are defunded, there won't be as many officers to reply and arrive to the scene fast enough, there will be a limited amount of squad cars, and there won't be enough money for proper training for the officers. Neighborhood watch communities can only do so much, the police can end conflict in an efficient manner.

 @9HPG7KG from Louisiana commented…3mos3MO

Here's the deal.

LEOs are NOT legally responsible for the service or protection of civilians, as per US Supreme Court.

LEOs are supposed to report or react to a crime.

Our second amendment is what we use.

A well run militia, NOT army or guard.

The younger generation has No Clue what 2nd class citizens, much less a 3rd world without an infrastructure any more.

 @9HMYJZQRepublican from Florida disagreed…4mos4MO

The police department is built to keep us safe and does a pretty good job at it. Defunding it just puts us in more danger and leaves innocent people having to wait longer to receive help.

 @9HN5BKJ from West Virginia disagreed…3mos3MO

George Floyd was a convicted criminal and was a threat at the time, the restraint was necessary and people should not idolize this behavior, especially criminals.

 @9HL4V9FRepublican from Illinois disagreed…4mos4MO

The police are here to protect us. They use the best judgement they have and everyone needs to remember that the police are just humans. They make mistakes but they should not be defunded because of only a handful of situations. The police force has done much more good for our country then bad.

 @HouseofMouse  from Texas commented…4mos4MO

The police system is one of many concepts that work better in theory, rather than in practice because of who fills those roles. If it were a more local standpoint I could potentially see myself backing this system, but because of the various reports of minorities being treated with more brutality than someone who's white, I'm strongly against supporting such a cause. I'm much more willing to support a system like firefighters as they choose to protect any individual, regardless of their gender and/or race. It's important to keep in mind that these individuals are human, which also means that their actions are reflected in their beliefs and views of the world, which can mean that they treat their citizens with kindness, but it can also lead to racial profiling in many cases.

 @9GZQ2JMWomen’s Equality from Florida agreed…4mos4MO

Police kill so many innocent civilians by being hostile, aggressive, or just misinterpreting circumstances and not taking the time to understand them.

 @9FDY58Y from New York disagreed…6mos6MO

i think that is one of the dumbest things we could do, without police criminals will overun everything because theres no fear factor of getting caught without police.

 @HouseofMouse  from Texas commented…4mos4MO

That statement in itself demonstrates the fear that the police system instills in people, especially minorities.

 @9H2RCSBGreen from Ohio agreed…4mos4MO

If we defund the police and redirect those funds towards other areas, we would see crime drop because poverty breeds crime. If we try our best to eliminate poverty by taking care of peoples basic needs, there would be no need for a stronger police as crime will plummet.

 @9GXWXY2Socialist from Kansas agreed…5mos5MO

the unites states spent over 1 billion dollars on police in 2022, reducing that ammount by even a quarter frees up 25,000,000 dollars for public schools, healthcare, really any social institution

 @9GZP5PQProgressive from Texas agreed…4mos4MO

I believe the funds for the police could be used more wisely. That money could be used for other programs within the department, such as mental health officers, officers that specialize in homelessness, family and domestic abuse issues, deescalation training, less deadly weapons, retraining of officers with less deadly weapons, community policing partnerships and so much more.

 @9GZWT2J from Texas agreed…4mos4MO

Look at the long list of atrocities committed by every police department in every big city. Why would we let these people be the enforcers of the law?

 @9GY76V8 from New York agreed…5mos5MO

Cops are doing more harm than good. They are given too much freedom to bust people for little things rather than big things. It's easier to sit on a corner and bust people for graffiti or speeding when they aren't arresting people for violent crimes. They over police communities that don't need to be over policed.

 @9GYRYVF from Massachusetts agreed…5mos5MO

The police in America as they are now treat the symptoms, not the cause. The cause is, as it has always been, poverty. Money spent on the police would be better spent on creating better, more equitable communities.

 @9GY878R from Maryland agreed…5mos5MO

More Americans died of gun-related injuries in 2021 than in any other year on record
Total federal spending on law enforcement and prisons totaled $71,931,937,501 in fiscal year 2021

 @9GXXY9Sfrom Guam agreed…5mos5MO

Police disproportionally kill, harass, and abuse minorities and having more police doesn't directly relate to lower crime rates. Crime is a systemic issue rather than a policing issue.

 @9GWM3BLPeace and Freedom from Virginia agreed…5mos5MO

I think that police should be defunded because there is no need for them to have military weapons like a tank or military assault rifles.

 @9GVPZDDPeace and Freedom from California agreed…5mos5MO

This approach eliminates the need for punitive policing by addressing the root causes of violent crime.Throwing more police on the street to solve a structural problem is one of the reasons why people are protesting in the streets.Defund the police” does not mean “abolish the police.” It means police would have a more limited, primarily peacekeeping role.

 @9H4L85Pfrom Maine agreed…4mos4MO

Thousands of Americans per year are brutally murdered as a result of police officers utilizing their abundant equipment for terrible purposes.

 @9GQYL88 from Washington agreed…5mos5MO

There is next to no situation where the police require a tank and military grade assault weapons if a situation reaches that point the military can and should be called in

 @9FDS5YC from Wisconsin disagreed…6mos6MO

How would that help those who need the police what solutions can be provided if the police was defunded I for one wouldn't want someone walking around carrying out vigilante justice

 @9HKH4YZ from Utah agreed…4mos4MO

in the Uvalde shooting police were laughing with each other and one was using his phone with his gun in his hand instead of taking down the shooter. police were also holding parents back from attempting to save their children rather than going inside themselves and saving the children, one parent even got arrested but later released.

 @9GVXJRRagreed…5mos5MO

The per capita and total rate of prisoners is the highest in the world. Most prisoners commit crimes again after they are released from prison.

 @9GTCZ4C from California agreed…5mos5MO

The police have been using excessive force on citizens for decades, we see this mostly in race issues. By defunding the police it would be like a protest leave almost by taking that time to force training and education in an attempt to keep our citizens safe

While there are multiple interpretations of “defund the police,” the basic definition is to move funding away from police departments and into community resources such as mental health experts, housing, and social workers. In the larger scope of the civil rights movement, some advocates would reallocate some police funding while keeping police departments, others would combine defunding with other police reforms such as body cameras and bias training, and others see defunding as a small step toward ultimately abolishing police departments and the prison system entirely

 @9H5K6F3Socialistagreed…4mos4MO

they already get a lot of money and states the have done this and invested into the community have lower crime rates

 @9GTSP6RWomen’s Equality from Indiana agreed…5mos5MO

We don't want to get rid of the police. They are a major part in keeping the world safe, but too much responsibility is placed on the shoulders of people who do not have the proper training for such tasks. To defund the police is to relocate the funds to other programs that aid in the prevention of violent and illegal behavior before it gets to a horrific degree.

 @9GXV8YQ from Arizona agreed…5mos5MO

Hundreds are killed in police related shootings every year. According to Statista each year there is close to at least a thousand police related deaths with the exception being 2023 so far. (Statista https://www.statista.com/statistics/585152/people-shot-to-death-by-us-police-by-race/ ). The police have also gotten worse at solving crime with 2023 reaching the worst clearance rating since 2009 with the general clearance rating being around 50% meaning half of all murders are solved.

 @9GXJHGQRepublican from New Mexico agreed…5mos5MO

Black persons are 24.9% of all police shooting victims.
Over 250000 people are hospitalized by the police every year.
Black people are 2.9 times more likely to be injured by the police

 @9GYSH8QGreen from Idaho agreed…5mos5MO

They give unnecessary tickets already taking my money, then taxes, basically giving them more money to do what with nothing necessary but can be used for other things that can get done and not need help again.

 @9KYVXNH from Nevada agreed…1wk1W

Lots of police departments do not protect their community or provide less for minorities like African American,Asian,or Hispanic communities.People whom know the police do not provide safety for them are fearful of them and what they can do to them with the amount of power they have surrounding them.Police create fear in people instead of safety and I honestly think they should not be funded for the things they do for white people instead of minorities who need more help than anyone in the U.S.

 @9KWJQHXDemocrat from Pennsylvania agreed…2wks2W

Here are five concise points to support defunding the police:

1. Police budgets have grown 500% in 40 years, while crime rates have decreased.
2. Studies show increasing police presence doesn't reduce crime.
3. Community programs and social services reduce crime and improve outcomes.
4. Police violence is a leading cause of death for Black men aged 15-34.
5. Alternative approaches in cities like Camden, NJ have reduced crime by 40%.

These points suggest defunding the police could lead to a more effective and equitable approach to public safety.

 @9JQGXF9 from Washington D.C. agreed…2mos2MO

Evidence and statistics repeatedly show that universal health care, cash transfers, housing, and education reduce crime.

"warrior training" is what cops undergo. its training for situations that they 9/10 times wont ever use at work. they are prepared with the wrong stuff and put it to use when its not necessary.

Preventing crime from the core is more powerful as de-escalation tactics can be more useful than going in with force.

 @9J949ZP from Arizona agreed…2mos2MO

Community is such an important part of being mentally healthy. America does not really value community historically and this is something that should change. If kids were able to find somewhere they really belong and make meaningful connections they would be less likely to commit crimes later in life.

 @9J4389Q from Kansas agreed…2mos2MO

Social programs to rehabiliate the marginalized communities most affected by policing would help to decrease crime, which is a benefit for both marginalized and non-marginalized communities

What have the police done for us? Protect the people? No. Aid the community? No. Protect our children? No. So what have they done? Nothing? Nothing would be great, instead the intimate the people, kill our children, target minority groups, and endanger communities. Gangs have done more to protect communities than any police force.

The police system has harmed and killed innocents because of the racial bias engrained in the system, and giving it more funds will allow this to continue. However, defunding the police will bring funds to public health programs that can protect people instead of hurting them, or abusing power, as the police often do, and harming innocents based on bias and the "traditional" beliefs of an unjust system.

 @9L4VR4P  from Texas agreed…4 days4D

Redirecting funds from police budgets to social services and community initiatives offers a more effective, equitable approach to public safety. Over-policing exacerbates societal divides, while alternatives like community policing and crisis intervention programs have proven successful in reducing crime and building trust. Investing in root causes of crime, such as poverty and lack of resources, fosters safer communities and aligns with public opinion supporting reallocating police funds towards social services.

 @9HKZR6S from Colorado agreed…4mos4MO

There needs to be .ore psychological testing done to become a police officer. Not just to become one but during a tenure, to make sure the sanity of said person allowed to wield a gun, tater and night stick has clarity to do their job, required by each precinct, county, state.

 @9H5HGH8 from Minnesota agreed…4mos4MO

police should get a lower raise becuse they have had a lot of issues with the system and thar use of force.
