If only high school curriculum includes learning about other races the kids will have no background unless their past teachers took initiative or if they are from a family who values teaching about that. Schooling, in my mind, is about building on material that has been introduced to you, math is the easiest lesson to see this. It is important to teach the youngsters about race so that those who come from non-diverse families are not at a disadvantage later when they learn about race theory for the first time when their diverse familied peers have the advantage of already having this knowledge.
