Take the case of professional sports that you've mentioned. The difference in pay stems from various factors: ticket sales, merchandise sales, viewership, and even individual branding. Essentially, it's market-driven, not gender-driven.
When it comes to jobs outside of professional sports, the same concept should apply. If a woman and a man are in the same position, with the same experience, doing the same job, they should be paid equally. If one outperforms the other, then yes, their pay should reflect that. But the starting point should be equal pay for equal work.
But, let's flip the coin for a moment. What if a man is being paid less than a woman for the same job, experience and performance? Would that be justified? I'm keen to hear your thoughts on this.
