Should the electoral college be abolished?
No, the electoral college ensures representation of the whole country instead of just major cities
However, in the current system, presidential candidates largely focus on swing states as is. There isn't any incentive for Joe Biden to campaign in Wyoming or Donald Trump to campaign in Rhode Island, but instead for both to focus their attention on Pennsylvania or Georgia. Also, since cities largely swing Democratic as is, a Republican nominee wouldn't solely campaign in big cities because that would be a bad use of resources. If anything, the current system minimizes the attention that presidential candidates would give swing voters in states that are deemed "safe." In a popular vote system, it would make more sense for Donald Trump to try and drive out voters in California and for Joe Biden to do the same in Missouri, whereas the current system being winner-take-all actively discourages this since there is no incentive to win by more votes; winning by 1 vote is the same amount of electoral votes as winning by 1 million.
