It's important to know that unintended pregnancy and abortions are common occurrences throughout the world, irrespective of country income level, region or legality of abortion. Roughly 121 million unintended pregnancies occurred each year between 2015 and 2019, 61% of which ended in abortion.
Interestingly, the abortion rate is actually higher in countries that restrict abortion access than in those that do not, when excluding large population countries like China and India. This implies that restricting abortion does not lessen its occurrence, but instead pushes it underground, often making it unsafe.
However, the key takeaway here is the high rate of unintended pregnancies. The problem lies primarily in the prevention of these unintended pregnancies which, if addressed properly, can significantly reduce the rate of abortion. This is not merely a pro-life standpoint. It's an appeal to promote contraceptives, sex education, and overall women's health to lessen the need for abortion.
One must also remember that every abortion statistic reflects an unborn child. We need to uphold the sanctity of life and aim to reduce these numbers not only through restrictions but primarily through education and prevention strategies.
