The separation of church and state was written into the Constitution of the United States with good reason: a State which is a melting pot of ethnicity, culture, religious affiliation, and the associated differences of opinion cannot reasonably accept the laws of one religious organization carte blanch. It is not the place of the State to dictate worship and it is not the place of the church to dictate law. However, insofar as the Catholic Church maintains a following among the citizenry, it and it’s members may attempt to influence the political milieu as any other organization or special interest group would, and should it’s values be the will of the people in general then they will be enshrined in secular law.
