Without the police, we'd live in a place without order. Yes, we have laws, but the point of the police is to enforce those laws.

Police are essential and should be given all of the support required, and should be supported against criminals in all situations

Respect for authority is a hallmark of civilized societies. When consequences of improper behavior are not inconvenient or uncomfortable the person has no reason to change. Fear is a great motivator and few people fear consequences in recent society. Rules have value and enforcing rules fairly/uniformly keeps people safe, secure, and content.
