The electoral college shifts the very value of a vote towards states with almost no one living there at all, and destroys any semblance of the very essence of a democratic-republic anyway. Besides, state legislature appointment could also reduce the public pandering needing to be done for every random senator on the list for the national congress. Then, if we get rid of the electoral college, we have the main three forms of election running the three branches: appointment for the Judicial Branch, representative voting for congress, and direct voting for the president. Sounds like a good balance replacement to me. I’ve actually had a lot of ideas for how a ranked-voting system for president could work, and those could still allow for a lot of options instead of just the two party system. If you destroy the winner-take-all system, the party candidates aren’t split between two until far later into the elections than usual. There could even be 3-4 main candidates. Overall if you value the destruction of a “one-or-the-other” type system, then we could use that one easily.
