The Civil War was not solely about slavery but also about economics and states' rights. The Southern states felt their rights were being trampled upon by the federal government, specifically their right to decide on issues such as slavery.

Additionally, labeling the Southern secession as "treason" is a matter of perspective. From the standpoint of the Southern states, they were exercising their right to self-determination, a principle deeply embedded in the foundation of our nation and the Declaration of Independence itself.

As for taking states' rights too far, it is more a question of finding the right balance between federal and state authority. A balance that is still being sought today in many aspects such as education, healthcare, and even marijuana legalization
