Should funding for local police departments be redirected to social and community based programs?
There have been many cases to support why defunding would be necessary, such as the death of George…
My example of George Floyd didn't serve as a reason for why all police systems should be defunded, but rather a more specific situation to better explain my claim. I still have much to research about the police system as a whole and the effects the community faces, but from what I've gathered, I'd say that there could be more successful alternatives that regulate our communities. There is still a heartbreaking number of black children who are taught at a young age how to respond to a police officer to prevent being shot/murdered. I once had a hesitant stance of saying ACAB, but through introspection and conversation, I've learned that saying an entire community is awful is an inherently black-and-white way of thinking. My current stance is that the police system should be defunded, not because I hate every cop that resides within that system, but because there is still racism and sexism perpetuated within that system.
